For weekly holiday rentals in close
contact with nature, situated in the countryside just a few kilometres from
Florence, the ancient farm of Cerreto Libri, built in 1792, offers a fine apartment
inside the old manor house.
The flat covers 150 square metres and is spread across two floors. It retains several of the original features, not least of which is the original large wood-fired oven where once was made the bread for the whole estate. The aristocratic atmosphere extends throughout both floors of the villa, as well as to the vast private garden (where a barbecue and brick oven make evening meals a delight), which is shaded by centuries-old trees and graced with beautiful views of the family vineyard. Kitchen (very well equipped) with 4 burner hob, electric oven and refrigerator (on request we can provide a kettle, toaster, American coffee machine). Upstairs are a fine living room and three independent bedrooms (two single beds each - on request we can provide double beds). Two bathrooms (one with shower, the other with tub and shower). Central heating and continuous hot water. Colour TV and telephone. Mail service once a week. Bed, bathroom and table linens. Paper goods, soaps and basic kitchen supplies are stocked upon arrival. Outside, the great garden of the villa with two ancient cedars of Lebanon, cypresses and lindens, offers a comfortable area in which to cool down and relax. (Comments from previous renters) ABOUT THE AREA Pontassieve took its name from the bridge that crossed the river Sieve and connected Florence and the Val di Sieve, the Casentino and the Valdarno. Its strategic value persuaded the Florentine Republic to build an imposing fortress, the Castle of San Michele Arcangelo, that, at the end of the 14th century, became the administrative centre of the area. The area, settled from pre-historical times, was the site of a remarkable Etruscan settlement, as witnessed by many archaeological finds; latterly, as can be seen by dozens of place-names and a great quantity of archaeological finds, it was colonised by the Romans. In the High Middle Ages the area was under the lordship of the Conti Guidi family and of a number of their vassals who populated the hills with their castles. VILLA HISTORY The complex, made up of the villa and of several farmhouses, was born from the restoration of ancient observation towers that from the Etruscan time until the mid 17th century dotted the hill. From 1791 on, after the marriage between Camilla del Rosso and Massimiliano Libri, the waterworks and the beginnings of grape and olive cultivation gave the farm its 19th century form. The 20th century brought the war and the farm, which is still owned by the Libri family, was restored for a modern life style and nowadays farms with with organic and biodynamic methods. The main products are the CHIANTI RUFINA D.O.C.G wine, the PODERNOVO I.G.T. extra-virgin olive oil, honey and other products, all of which are on sale at the farm. Florence is just 15 kilometres away, there is a railway station at 2 kilometres and a restaurant at 1.5 kilometres. |
