ITALY VILLAS - VILLA IL PORTICO, LARGE COUNTRY VILLA CLOSE TO FLORENCE, TUSCANY

This large holiday rental property (sleeps 10), originally a farmhouse owned by the Medici family, and dating back to the early fifteenth century, lies 20 km south-west of Florence, and 3 km from San Casciano, between Florence and Siena.

Surrounded by well-kept and ample private furnished garden space, and with a 17 x 7 metre swimming pool, Villa Il Portico is composed of two stone buildings from the 15th century. One of these has been beautifully restored with a careful eye to maintaining the authenticity of typical Tuscan architecture, with wood-beamed ceilings, cotto floors and whitewashed walls, whilst at the same time adding the most modern amenities.

The villa is reached by own 800 metre 'white road' that leads up to the villa and no further; this type of road is typical of the Chianti region. The other stone building was a barn, now empty, but the owner has plans to restore the interior at some time in the future.

Villa Il Portico sits in a hilltop setting that has a dominating position over the surround vineyards and countryside of the Chianti Classico district. The house itself is surrounded by 7 acres of fenced land (with many olive groves) inviting guests to country walks in the hills. Under an archway, there is a glass table perfect for dining al fresco.

The first floor rooms surround the arched outdoor dining area with no separation from each other, giving a spacious and open welcome. There is a large country 'eat-in' kitchen with fireplace, a large side-by-side refrigerator with ice-maker, dishwasher, microwave, oven, and stove top with 6 burners. Then there's a full bathroom with shower, double sink, bidet and toilet, a laundry room, studio, dining room, living room with fireplace and satellite TV, and a sleep-sofa for two.

Upstairs are 2 full bathrooms (with tub, double sink, bidet and WC), a third ensuite full bathroom, linen storage, five bedrooms (two with large double beds and three with twin beds); a large billiards room, and a sauna for 2 people.

Furnishings are of the highest quality and everything is beautifully maintained. There are a family housekeeper and gardener who live away from the villa. In the near vicinity are plenty of good restaurants (Cerbaia village or san Casciano village) , many of which are a hybrid of bar/grocery/restaurant and village gossip spot, which produce some of the most delicious and best value meals you can hope to enjoy.

The Florence - Siena superstrada is within a 10 minute drive, putting both of these glorious cities of resplendent art and architecture into the 'unmissable' category for anyone staying at the villa. Alternatively, park the car in Cerbaia village, just 4 km's away, and in 30 minutes be in the centre of Florence by bus. In the medieval town of San Casciano, just 5 km's away you will find restaurants, bakery, a store for fruit and vegetables, butcher, a bank, Post Office, tourist office and supermarket.
